Audubon Zoo Announces Giraffe Death

Audubon Zoo is heartbroken to announce the death of one of its giraffe.

Four-year-old Fennessy had recently experienced a decline in his overall health including refusing to eat and lethargy. His care team noticed the changes in his behavior and brought in the Zoo’s veterinary team to assist in monitoring him. Despite receiving examinations and constant supportive care, his condition worsened, and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him.

Fennessy came to Audubon Zoo from the Abilene Zoo and was named after the founder and director of the Giraffe Conservation Fund, Julian Fennessy.

Initial examination results for the cause of his decline were inconclusive, and a necropsy will be done in an effort to gather additional information.

Fennesy’s care team will always remember building his comfort and confidence in his habitat by relying on a relationship founded on trust. After settling in, he was always happy to greet staff and guests, supervise any work around his habitat, or accept his favorite snack of romaine lettuce. He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Audubon Zoo has one remaining giraffe on exhibit, four-year-old Maverick, and his care team will be providing him with extra support and attention during this time of change.
