As a strong and effective advisor, Dr. Francis inspired generations of students, elected officials, and community leaders through his wisdom, integrity, and unwavering commitment to education. His keen understanding of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina helped guide the city’s rebirth and strengthened its resolve during one of its most challenging chapters.

The Advocacy Impact Award recognizes exceptional efforts by AZA-accredited institutions (both U.S. and international) and conservation partner members toward advocacy initiatives that advance legislation for animal wellbeing, habitat preservation, species restoration, support of biodiversity in the wild, as well as the work of AZA-accredited members in confiscation, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts.

The award celebrates excellence and innovation in the execution of strategic, proactive advocacy efforts that provide engagement opportunities for our collective zoo and aquarium community to advance policy and help ‘move the needle’ on priority legislation.

Audubon Zoo partnered with North Carolina Zoo and AZA’s Government Affairs team to lead discussions with the U.S. Department of Energy about recently enacted energy efficiency standards for general service lamps. Many of these lamps provide necessary light wavelengths that are important for animal health and wellbeing, particularly for reptiles and amphibians. The Zoos provided details about the biology, husbandry and specific lighting needs of reptiles and amphibians, shared concerns, and evaluated more than 1,000 lamps for suitability as potential alternatives.

Their work showed that no suitable lighting alternatives for animal care currently exist; after hearing from the Zoo partners, the Department of Energy suspended enforcement of the rule for lamps made and sold for animal care purposes. This ensures these lamps will continue to be available to zoos and aquariums in the U.S. and lays the groundwork for developing the next generation of lighting technologies and performance standards for animal care.

Audubon Nature Institute announces the appointment of Cara Banasch as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), a newly created role within the organization. Banasch will officially begin her tenure in July 2025.

Banasch brings a wealth of experience in strategic leadership and commercial development to Audubon Nature Institute. With a distinguished career spanning over three decades, she has held pivotal roles in various organizations, driving growth and innovation. Her expertise in commercial strategy, marketing, and business development will be instrumental in advancing Audubon’s mission.

In her new role as CCO, Banasch will oversee all commercial operations, including marketing, sales, and business partnerships. She will work closely with the executive team to enhance visitor experiences, expand revenue streams, and strengthen Audubon’s position as a leading nature institute.

For many New Orleanians, parks, play spaces and the waterfronts are not just greenspaces but integral components for their health, happiness and overall well-being. However, disparities in park conditions, play spaces and accessibility have been stark, disproportionately affecting the city’s most disadvantaged populations. After conducting various workshop sessions, focus groups, stakeholder conversations and meeting residents where they are via Park Ambassadors, "The Big Green Easy" is a historic and community-driven framework for citywide park and recreation investments. 

“The Big Green Easy is New Orleans' opportunity to make generational investments in public green spaces,” said Director of Parks and Parkways Michael Karam. “The Department of Parks and Parkways looks forward to applying the master plan, generated by public, Park Partner, Park Ambassador and professional input, into current park use and when crafting future greenspaces to strengthen communities.” 

For the first time in New Orleans history, the plan prioritizes projects based on community needs and feedback, aiming to bridge the gap in park disparities. The urgency of implementation is emphasized by the city's increasing vulnerability to climate change, resulting in rising temperatures and increased flood risks. This comprehensive plan offers a path forward, celebrating the distinct cultures and identities of New Orleans while fostering a cooler, greener, healthier, more resilient and just city for all. "The Big Green Easy" is not just a plan for parks; it's a commitment to a more inclusive, vibrant and resilient New Orleans. 

“The plan presents a solid framework for building a park system for the future, grounded in providing equal opportunities for play and recreation to all of our residents. It is a terrific step forward,” said City Park Conservancy President and CEO Cara M. Lambright.

On Monday, July 24, 2023, Audubon Commission will host a public meeting to provide an opportunity for the public to offer input on a draft of the schematic plans for development of the wharves into park and recreational space benefiting the community. This meeting will be held in the Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium event space, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and is the final meeting prior to the submission of schematic plans to the City in early August. 

Delayed due to Covid, the plan harnesses the creative vision of Reinventing the Crescent and involves several governmental agencies and community associations in the area, including the City, working with Audubon Commission to convert the wharves into public park space. 

Riverfront for All will create one of the largest contiguous riverfront parks in the nation. The project is the final link from Crescent Park in the Bywater neighborhood to Spanish Plaza at the foot of Canal Street. 

"The history of New Orleans was written along the banks of the Mississippi River, creating a park that spans  two and a quarter miles, giving locals and visitors to the city a new experience on the riverfront,” said J. Kelly Duncan, Audubon Commission President. 

Audubon is partnering with Eskew + Dumez + Ripple, a widely recognized architectural firm known for planning projects with a dedication to community outreach, to design the space. 

The community feedback phase for this project began in 2018 with several meetings held across the city. The planning process has incorporated public input and involved examining alternatives to address recent nearby riverfront improvements, a review of comparative analysis of other successful waterfronts worldwide, and concept development. The submission and approval of the schematic plan are the next steps in the development process before design and construction processes get underway. 

If approved, construction could begin as soon as August 2024. 
 

In partnership with the non-profit Heart of Passion (HoP), Audubon is hosting teens with cancer from Louisiana, Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama as part of an annual four-day, three-night Red Carpet Day Retreat (RCD) in New Orleans. The retreat is designed to give the teenagers time to relax, have fun, and make connections with others facing similar health challenges. 

The breakfast at Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium is a highlight of their week, according to organizers. They will enjoy a private, before-hours "Breakfast with the Sharks" in front of the huge Gulf of Mexico exhibit, then tour the newly renovated Aquarium and Insectarium. 

The Red Carpet Day Retreat happens in New Orleans July 17-20 and this year is themed as a Hollywood movie premiere. The teens will have other adventures throughout the city during the week including a tour of a movie studio, Mardi Gras World and a private riverboat cruise with an “old Hollywood” theme. 
 

The four days of events are designed to help guests have fun and create lasting memories. 

“When a teenager is diagnosed with cancer, they often lose some of the typical teenage activities, time with their friends and other social opportunities. By taking part in the Red Carpet Day Retreat, these teens get a chance to make friends with others who have or are also undergoing similar health experiences. It gives them an opportunity to get away and have fun like a normal teenager,” said Savannah Solomon, the founder of Heart of Passion. 

Heart of Passion’s Red Carpet Retreat takes a “for teens from teens” approach that serves the guests while providing practical training for local high school leaders through the organization’s Leadership Development Program (LDP). This unique, intensive year-long program offers high school students an opportunity to experience life in the business world while learning about compassion as they plan and execute Red Carpet Day. This year, local teens from Sacred Heart, Sophie B. Wright, Jesuit and Newman are participating. 

Since its founding in 2002, Heart of Passion has hosted Red Carpet Day Retreats for teens with cancer in Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte and New Orleans, serving more than 450 patients in those regions. This is the 32nd Red Carpet Retreat, including a virtual retreat in 2020. This is the first time the teens have visited the Aquarium and Insectarium since Covid. This is the 13th time the event has been held in New Orleans. 

Heart of Passion’s dual mission strives to instill a love of community engagement in the next generation of community leaders while tearing down the walls that cancer builds socially and emotionally for teens.

Margaret arrived in New Orleans in January 1994 from a Texas farm. She was a donkey in every way, she was stubborn, smart, spicy, and sweet. Her care team says she would greet them with a good morning bray when they arrived at her barn. Margaret had favorites on her care team, but they say everyone always knew where they stood with her. Margaret loved an occasional treat…and her care team says she could hear a mint being unwrapped from a mile away.

She was an active participant in her care over the years and that definitely helped keep her healthy and happy for so long.

Margaret will be deeply missed by all of her care staff and everyone she encountered. Her care team says they hope all the  kids (and adults) that she met through the years were inspired to make the world a better place for animals and wild places.

“Having electric vehicle chargers at the Zoo and the Fly is another step in becoming sustainable and making positive changes to help the environment,” said Ron Forman, Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO. “These chargers align with our mission to engage and encourage people to take actions in their lives that lead to large improvements for our world. We are honored to host EV chargers here, and proud to partner with Entergy New Orleans and the City of New Orleans to provide access to these chargers in our community.”

The Audubon installations are part of a broader EV charging station program run by Entergy New Orleans in partnership with the City of New Orleans to install 30 charging stations at 25 locations across the city.

"The charging stations at the Audubon Zoo and Fly, which are open to the public and free to use, are another step in our efforts to provide equitable access to electric charging stations throughout all our communities," said Deanna Rodriguez, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. "Our partnership with the City of New Orleans and the City Council is important in making sure we have the infrastructure in place to make that happen."

According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, EVs are expected to decrease annual greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle by approximately 64 percent. As New Orleans transitions to cleaner energy resources, there will be additional emissions reductions realized as well.

The United States Congress is also taking steps to reduce the cost to purchase EVs. On Aug. 16, 2022, President Joe Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act, which includes tax credits for qualifying electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids that are assembled in the United States. This expanded tax credit will begin in 2023 and will be available up to $7,500 for new vehicles and $4,000 for used EVs.

Audubon Zoo has a new operating schedule for 2023 and Audubon's popular Community Connect Program is returning. 
In January and February 2023, Audubon Zoo will be open six days a week from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and closed only on Tuesdays. From March 4 through September 3, it will be open seven days a week. Starting September 4, 2023, through the end of 2023 the Zoo will be open six days a week, closing on Tuesdays. Visit audubonnatureinstitute.org for holidays and special opening hours. 
 

Both Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium are undergoing major renovations and will reopen to welcome guests for an entirely new experience in summer 2023. Schedules for those facilities will be announced in the spring.

Audubon Nature Institute is continuing its commitment to engaging and educating the community about the natural world by renewing the Audubon Community Connect program in 2023. This initiative consists of three components to make Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium more accessible for New Orleanians: 

Orleans Parish Appreciation Days: Orleans Parish residents receive free admission to Audubon facilities for themselves and up to four guests when they present a valid government-issued photo ID. On the third Thursday of the month, Orleans Parish residents receive free admission to the Audubon Zoo. Orleans Parish residents can make ticket reservations in advance online. 
Appreciation Days for Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium will be announced once those attractions reopen in summer 2023 following renovations. 

Audubon SNAP Program: Orleans Parish SNAP benefit recipients receive free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium year-round (special events restrictions apply). SNAP participants and up to four guests receive free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium when they present a valid ID that matches their SNAP card. SNAP recipients can make ticket reservations in advance online. Audubon Aquarium will reopen in summer 2023. 

Audubon Museum Culture Pass: Audubon has partnered with New Orleans Public Library to offer Culture Passes for checkout by Orleans Parish library cardholders. Audubon has provided a limited number of passes which can be used every day that Audubon is open. Each pass provides entry for five guests during a two-week period. The Touro Nursing Nest features comfortable seating for nursing moms, diaper changing stations, electrical outlets to accommodate breast pumps, and maternal and infant health information provided by Touro.

Located near the Zoo’s playground area, the Touro Nursing Nest provides a climate-controlled building for nursing mothers to feed their infants in privacy away from the excitement of the Zoo.

“Family time is important, and as one of the city’s top family attractions, we know special memories are being made here every day, “said Daine Appleberry, Audubon Zoo’s Senior Vice President of Operations. “We are thankful for Touro’s gift, making it possible to offer this quiet place for nursing mothers and their babies."

After their nursing time, mothers and babies can see several other little ones around the Zoo. Sumatran orangutan Roux made his public debut this spring and can be seen holding tightly to his mother in their outdoor enclosure while other orangutan youngsters play nearby. Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered, making baby Roux a most welcome addition to the world and Audubon Zoo.

In the Louisiana Swamp exhibit, three fuzzy orphaned bear cubs are making themselves at home and delighting guests with their antics.  The smallest bear is “Sassafras,” a Louisiana black bear cub found alone in a tree in north Louisiana. She is joined by two orphaned black bear sisters from Alaska who have just arrived in New Orleans and will also grow up at Audubon Zoo.

The 101-year-old fountain is a popular and picturesque spot for park visitors and will soon have new landscaping, irrigation, and benches to be used by those enjoying the fountain and its peaceful surroundings.  There will also be a new concrete skirt around the base of the fountain with decorative stamping to match the existing design pattern.

Other repairs underway aren’t as visible, but no less important. They include improved plumbing, replacing the inner trough, electrical work and upgraded drainage to help the fountain function better.

The beloved Hyams Fountain was created with a bequest to Audubon Park by Mrs. Chapman H. Hyams in 1914, and it was opened in 1921.

Moon Landrieu was a remarkable visionary. His legacy has changed New Orleans for generations.

 His leadership advanced our city in terms of both economics and equity. For a century yet to come, we will enjoy the shelter and benefit of the enormous shadow cast by the legacy of one of the most extraordinary men our  city has produced.

 As I join the community mourning his passing, I look back at his challenge to Audubon Commission members as they debated the future of Audubon Zoo: Fix the Zoo or close it.

 Audubon Zoo is now recognized as one of the top Zoos in the country, thanks to his leadership and wisdom. The truth is, our Zoo – and the entire Audubon Nature Institute – wouldn’t be here without Moon Landrieu. He was an innovative leader, and his commitment to New Orleans was unparalleled.

 We send the Landrieu family our deepest condolences for the loss of Moon and our sincere thanks for the legacy he built for the city he loved so much.

The Taylor Scholars Awards Program is a statewide program that rewards students in grades sixth through twelve with a GPA of 2.5 or higher with unlimited free admission for one year to Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and NOMA.

“These proposed improvements will create state-of-the-art public facilities that honor the needs of the recreational tennis community, new youth players, and community partners,” said Audubon Nature Institute’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Kyle Burks. “The new amenities and multi-functional community space will be a resource for the public to enjoy while maintaining the sustainable balance of active and passive space in Audubon Park. The proposal will increase access to tennis while retaining the facility’s original footprint.” 

Audubon hosted two public meetings in 2019, and since those meetings, has engaged extensively with individual groups interested in discussing the tennis infrastructure, facilities, and programming. Audubon met with avid Audubon Park tennis players and representatives of the New Orleans Metropolitan Area Tennis Association, United States Tennis Association, NORDC, Loyola University, Tulane University, Children’s Hospital New Orleans, and neighbor groups to reach a wide variety of users and develop a vision for Audubon Tennis that reflects community need.  

Audubon also aims to partner with the United States Tennis Association for their expertise in design and programming to develop a robust tennis program for players across the city.  

“We are proud to increase accessibility of all types of tennis in the New Orleans community,” said Executive Director of the Louisiana Tennis Association Bill Phillips. “Our partnership with Audubon and the proposed improvements to the courts will allow us to maximize tennis for all ages and skill levels.”  

Audubon has also engaged Tulane University in discussions about a funding partnership, which will allow Audubon to continue to provide high-quality tennis to the public and Tulane’s student athletes and meet the community's priorities. Tulane student athletes and coaches will also connect with the community through clinics and summer camp opportunities at the improved Audubon courts. 

The courts are currently underused at various times of the day and cannot accommodate tennis in the evening. The proposal includes directional lights for tennis at night, improved restroom facilities, an electronic reservation system, and new locker rooms. The proposed layout would include complete refurbishment of six clay courts and installation of six new hard courts, increasing the number of playable courts at the facility from ten to twelve. Hard courts would be added in order to comply with NCAA regulations for college athletes and to meet the desires of members of the public who do not play on clay courts and for whom play at Audubon has not been an option to this point. 

Burks added, “We take our responsibility as stewards of some of our community’s most beloved assets and spaces very seriously. Audubon’s goal is to meet the needs of the entire New Orleans tennis community. At all times, Audubon’s tennis facilities will remain open to the public.” 

The proposal offers opportunities to welcome new players and expand Audubon’s partnership with NORDC to reach more youth tennis players.  

“Outreach and support of youth tennis programs in our community is integral,” said NORD Chief Executive Officer Larry Barabino Jr. “NORD is thrilled with the proposal to increase opportunities for lessons and play by younger and more diverse players. We are looking forward to embarking on this partnership with Audubon.”

Summer Camp is open to children ages 4-13. Campers will enjoy the Zoo as their playground as they discover wild animals and habitats and how people can work together to make a positive impact on them. This year, Zoo Krewe campers, ages 11-13, will also participate in field trips and hands-on service activities. 

“Summer camp at Audubon Zoo is filled with fun and meaningful experiences that connect campers to nature and demonstrate how to make a positive impact on the world around us,” said Audubon’s Director of Education Llewellyn Everage. “Campers will discover how their individual actions help the natural world and how we can all work together to protect the animals and habitats we love.”

About 25 million pounds of beads are thrown at Mardi Gras each year, but only around 266 thousand pounds of beads were recycled after Mardi Gras in 2019. Audubon attractions are committed to keeping Mardi Gras beads out of landfills and away from nature by making it easier for parade lovers to give their beads a second life. 

“Carnival season is a special time in Louisiana,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “But, the parades, throws, and costumes create waste that can harm nature and wildlife. Together, we can vow to pick up after ourselves and recycle so that we can all feel good about letting the good times roll.” 

Some suggestions for celebrating Mardi Gras sustainably include: 

• During parades, reuse throws from prior years or use recycled throws from retailers like Arc of Greater New Orleans. 
• Don’t toss collected throws after a parade. Save them for next year, bring them to a recycling drop-off point or offer them for free online for crafters or future parade riders. 
• Reduce vehicle use by walking, biking or taking public transportation to parades, parties and balls. Parade-goers can also use rideshares or carpools. 
• Pack environmentally-friendly parade picnics. Use reusable bottles and storage containers when possible and recyclable materials like aluminum and glass. Glass cannot be put in curbside recycling, but there are multiple glass drop-off locations in the New Orleans area. 
• Wear homemade costumes instead of store-bought ones. Use materials from around the house or purchased secondhand at a thrift store. If buying materials, try to avoid plastic and buy things that can be reused. 
• Clean up parade spot before leaving. Make sure to take all trash and have a designated bin or bag for recyclables.

Nature at Night features "kid-only" events for children ages 6-12 where they can enjoy a special animal experience, pizza party, an event-themed art project, and a flashlight tour of the Zoo. This series will be offered Friday and Saturday nights beginning March 11, 2022.

Audubon Nature Institute is continuing its commitment to engaging and educating the community about the natural world by renewing the Audubon Community Connect program in 2022. This initiative consists of three components to make Audubon Zoo and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas more accessible for New Orleanians:  

1. Orleans Parish Appreciation Days: Orleans Parish residents receive free admission to Audubon facilities for themselves and up to four guests when they present a valid government-issued photo ID. Days rotate between the Aquarium and Zoo. On the first Thursday of the month, Orleans Parish residents receive free admission to the Aquarium, and on the third Thursday of the month residents receive free admission to the Zoo. Visit this link to see the entire 2022 Orleans Parish Appreciation Day Calendar. 2. Audubon SNAP Program: Orleans Parish SNAP benefit recipients receive free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium year-round (special events restrictions apply). SNAP participants and up to four guests receive free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium when they present a valid ID that matches their SNAP card. SNAP recipients can make ticket reservations in advance online.    

3. Audubon Museum Culture Pass: Audubon has partnered with the New Orleans Public Library to offer Culture Passes for checkout by Orleans Parish Library cardholders. Audubon has provided 15 passes per day to both the Aquarium and the Zoo. These passes can be used any day that Audubon is open. Each pass provides entry for two adults and seven children. To reserve a pass, visit culturepass.nolalibrary.org, call the Library at 504-529-7323, or by visit any New Orleans Public Library location.

   NOTE: Due to limitations, guests cannot reserve a timed ticketing slot online with these passes. Guests will need to redeem at a customer service window at the gate based on availability.

Lion populations have declined by half in just a quarter century. Their loss signals the loss of the wild in Africa. All proceeds from Audubon’s "Lights for Lions“ recycling program will support the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. Every string of lights donated makes a difference.  

“Lights for Lions is an impactful way to connect our community with an important conservation initiative,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “We will make sure all string lights are responsibly recycled, so community members can enjoy their holidays knowing that they helped save animals in the wild.”  

Most string lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in the strands. The public can help by recycling unused or discarded lights and keeping them from going to a landfill. The “Lights for Lions” drop-off box is located outside of the Zoo front entrance.

While Audubon’s doors were closed at times during COVID-19 and Hurricane Ida, Audubon never stopped providing outstanding care for its animals. Audubon is asking you to support the animals in their care by donating to the Audubon Recovery Fund.  

Audubon provides top-notch veterinary care, the highest quality nutritious diets, and engaging activities for its animals. Audubon pays nearly $70,000 a month to feed animals such as giraffe, sea otters, sharks, lions, and gorillas. A gift to the Recovery Fund plays an important role in protecting these animals for future generations.

The City of New Orleans is requiring everyone 12 years of age and older entering indoor exhibits and dining at the Zoo to provide proof of at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine or negative PCR COVID-19 test result from the past 72 hours. Face masks are also required at all of the Zoo’s indoor exhibits and dining.

Audubon is also bringing back its highly successful virtual outreach programs for the 2021-2022 school year. These programs allow students to discover amazing animals with Audubon educators as they explore nature and science together. Each class is designed to last up to 45 minutes and will combine science topics aligned with Louisiana state science standards and live animal presentations.

Students can interact in real time with educators and live animals through streaming video conferencing as they discover new things about the world around them.

“For years, Chevron has partnered with Audubon Nature Institute on exciting initiatives like their virtual outreach programs,” said Public Affairs Manager of Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit Leah Brown. “Online, children will be introduced to an array of amazing animals and have the opportunity to ask the Audubon educators questions. We hope the experience will inspire within them a passion for learning, while also encouraging them to celebrate the wonders of nature. Chevron is proud to be a part of it." 

Thanks to the support of Chevron, Title I schools in Louisiana are eligible for complimentary virtual programming in the 2021-2022 school year. This includes up to one complimentary visit to each K-8th classroom. Schools with Title I Targeted Assistance Programs will receive a 10% discount.

“We are so excited to offer NORD campers the opportunity to experience nature at our attractions this summer,” said Audubon Vice President of Community Affairs Chimene Grant Saloy. “We believe that every person who comes through our gates has the power to impact the natural world for the better. We are committed to engaging and educating these young campers about the wonders of nature and encouraging them to take action to protect them.” 

This summer NORD is hosting 34 youth camps across New Orleans, and each camp will have the opportunity to visit the Zoo and Aquarium. 

These complimentary field trips are part of Audubon Nature Institute’s commitment to the Cooperative Endeavor Agreement among the city’s four Park Partners in the parks and recreation millage approved by Orleans Parish voters in 2019. 

Audubon is not currently offering any other groups or field trips at this time due to timed ticketing constraints. Audubon is working toward reopening to groups in the fall.

Regular admission to Cool Zoo, which includes Gator Run, is $8 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $10 for non-Members in addition to Audubon Zoo admission. Cool Zoo tickets must be purchased online. For more details about tickets, cabana rentals, and the 2021 season schedule click HERE. 

“Unlike in years past, Audubon will offer two sessions each day for guests to enjoy Cool Zoo,” said Audubon Nature Institute Vice President of Guest Services Daine Appleberry. “These two daily sessions allow our team to manage capacity limitations, provide room for physical distancing, and comply with CDC guidelines.” 

The two sessions are 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Cool Zoo will close at 1 p.m. each day to allow Audubon staff ample time to clean all shared equipment and surfaces between sessions. 

Even with some operational changes, Cool Zoo still includes all its visitor-favorite features: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes, and shady spots for grownups. Back for its sixth year, the Gator Run lazy river offers Zoo visitors the option to cool down by floating atop an inner tube along a course that measures 750 feet in length. Three-feet-deep and 10-feet-wide, the lazy river features two sand beaches as well as water cannons that can be used to shower visitors as they float by.  

Gator Run includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers, and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand.  

Rafts for Gator Run are included in the Cool Zoo admission price. Anyone under 48 inches tall will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo.  

Outside food and drinks are welcomed in Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but cooler and ice chest sizes cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted in the Zoo for the safety of our animals. Audubon reserves the right to search coolers. 

Appleberry added, “We are very excited to welcome our guests back to Cool Zoo and once again offer them a way to stay cool while visiting the Zoo.” 

Starting August 7, the water park will return to weekends only through Labor Day, September 6, when the water park will close for the 2021 season. 

The highest priorities identified during the meetings and online comments were:

- The need for lights to accommodate evening tennis play
- Maintain clay courts
- Improve facilities such as restrooms, clubhouse, amenities
- Electronic reservation system
- Increased opportunity for lessons/play by younger and more diverse players

We also considered the following key elements: 

• Funding is required but not currently available 
• Audubon desires to meet the needs of the New Orleans tennis community 
• Audubon wishes to explore new opportunities to reach new players and introduce a lifelong sport to young players and explore new offerings, such as pickleball
• Audubon wishes to continue and expand our partnership with NORDC to reach more youth tennis players and more diverse players. 

Audubon has engaged Tulane University in discussions about a funding partnership, which will allow us to continue to provide high quality tennis to the public AND meet the Audubon and community priorities. 

Community partnerships are essential to providing meaningful impact. 

Elements of the proposed partnership we are exploring include (but are not limited to):

• At all times Audubon tennis will remain an open to the public tennis center for our entire community. Tulane is not “taking over” Audubon Tennis. 
• Upgrades will address areas of improvement for community tennis, including the addition of hard courts and preservation of clay courts, light installation, facility upgrades and improved technology 
• Tulane and Audubon will commit to engaging in outreach and support of youth tennis citywide, including but not limited to enhancing our partnership with NORDC. 

Please know that we are still in the planning phase and no final decisions have been made. There is no scheduled vote on this at the next Audubon Commission meeting on June 10.

Audubon Zoo partnered with Children’s Hospital to name the newest member of its orangutan group. Staff and patients at the hospital voted for their favorite of a list of three names.  

The three names included:  

• Madu - Malay word for honey 
• Bani – Indonesian word meaning “children” 
• Matahari - Malay word meaning sun 

Children from the hospital exuberantly unveiled the winning name yesterday morning in a celebration at the Zoo. The event took place directly in front of the Sumatran orangutan habitat, so the orangutan group, including the infant and her mother, Reese, attended.  

“Our patients had so much fun being invited to help name Audubon’s baby orangutan,” said President and CEO of Children’s Hospital New Orleans John R. Nickens IV. “Working together with our partners at Audubon, we love being able to bring enrichment opportunities to our patients at the hospital. This is a great example of finding creative ways to work together to deliver a little something extra for our patients and families. We’re so excited to watch the baby grow and thrive for many years to come.”

This infant is Reese’s first offspring and the second infant born at Audubon Zoo to dad Jambi since his arrival from Hanover Zoo in Germany in 2018. Jambi also fathered Bulan, the female born to orangutan matriarch Feliz in 2019.  

“We were thrilled to have our long-time partners Children’s Hospital New Orleans help us make this big decision,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “Throughout this last year, they have offered immense support that has been essential to the recovery of our attractions.” 

Audubon is committed to helping create experiences that spark action and empower visitors to impact the natural world for the better. The orangutan group at the Zoo serves as ambassadors for their species, teaching guests about the plight of Sumatran orangutans in the wild due to human-wildlife conflict.

Maintaining a genetically diverse population in human care is important because Sumatran orangutans have been assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as “critically endangered” and therefore threatened with extinction—there are fewer than 14,000 living in the wild, and their numbers are declining, mainly due to human-wildlife conflict due to the spread of palm oil plantations into their forest habitat. 

There are currently 95 Sumatran orangutans in human care across 27 Association of Zoos and Aquariums organizations. 

To help orangutans in the wild, Audubon recommends purchasing products with sustainably grown palm oil. Around the world, those using sustainable practices in logging and agriculture are demonstrating that it is possible to conserve wildlife habitat while supporting the local economy.

The Taylor Scholars Awards Program is a statewide program that rewards students in grades sixth through twelve with a GPA of 2.5 or higher with complimentary access to Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, Audubon Zoo, and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).  

During the 2020-2021 academic year, more than 223,000 students from across the state have been recognized for academic excellence with a free Membership to Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas, and NOMA in New Orleans.  

"The Taylor Scholars Awards Program has been a bright spot for students during a particularly difficult year due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Audubon President and CEO Ron Forman. “Many Taylor Scholars have used their award to visit our attractions with friends, as a safe way to spend time together outdoors. Our hope is that, by encouraging students to visit Audubon Zoo or Aquarium, youth will continue to be inspired to protect and preserve the natural world for the better.” 

Taylor Scholars receive free admission, discounts, and special access for the Taylor Scholar and up to four guests on Taylor Family Free Day. In 2021, NOMA’s Taylor Family Free Day is May 22 and Audubon’s Taylor Family Free Day is June 4.

Over the past two decades, more than 3.7 million awards have been distributed to students across the state. Participation in the program has grown steadily over the past two decades and more than 15,000 awards have been distributed this year than last year. 

Through the Taylor Scholars Awards Program, the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation strives to encourage young people to excel in the classroom. The Program was created to provide motivation and incentive to achieve this goal.

Taylor. “We are proud to partner with Audubon Nature Institute and NOMA to encourage Louisiana students to do well in school and communicate the important message that learning does not stop at the classroom.” 

The Taylor Scholars Awards Program was created in partnership with the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation. A generous donation established the program and has allowed Audubon and NOMA to continue to recognize students across the state for their hard work.

This year, unlike years past, Audubon will offer two sessions each day for guests to enjoy Cool Zoo while visiting Audubon Zoo. These two daily sessions allow Audubon to manage capacity limitations, provide room for physical distancing, and comply with CDC guidelines. At 1 PM each day, between sessions, Cool Zoo will close to allow Audubon staff ample time to clean all shared equipment and surfaces. The two sessions are 10 AM – 1 PM and 2 PM – 5 PM. 

“We are very excited to welcome our guests back to Cool Zoo and once again offer them a way to stay cool while visiting the Zoo,” said Audubon Nature Institute Vice President of Guest Services Daine Appleberry. “We are working hard to make sure our guests have fun, but also stay safe when enjoying our attractions.” 

Starting August 7, the water park will return to weekends-only through Labor Day, September 6, when the water park will close for the 2021 season. 

Regular admission to Cool Zoo, including Gator Run, is $8 for Audubon Nature Institute Members and $10 for non-Members, plus Audubon Zoo admission. Cool Zoo tickets must be purchased online. For more details, about tickets and the 2021 season schedule click here. 

Cool Zoo includes all its visitor-favorite features: the alligator water slide, the spider monkey soaker, water-spitting snakes, and shady spots for grownups. Back for its sixth year, the Gator Run lazy river offers Zoo visitors the option to cool down by floating atop an inner tube along a course that measures 750 feet in length. Three-feet-deep and 10-feet-wide, the lazy river features two sand beaches and water cannons that can be used to shower visitors as they float by. 

Gator Run includes showers, restrooms, lockers, outdoor seating, a private area for nursing mothers, and the "Gator Bites'' concession stand, serving a menu of pizza and other food and beverage items. 

Rafts are included in the admission price for Gator Run. Anyone under 48 inches will need a life jacket supplied by Audubon Zoo. 

Outside food and drinks are welcomed in Cool Zoo and Gator Run, but the size of coolers and ice chests cannot exceed 28 quarts. Glass containers and disposable straws and lids are not permitted for the safety of our animals. Audubon reserves the right to search coolers.

On Monday, February 8, volunteers from the Krewe of Themis put the finishing touches on their “house float” decorations adorning the front of Audubon Zoo. The theme of the decorations is “Be Kind to Every Kind” and beautifully hand-crafted flowers embellish the front entrance columns of the Zoo. “Lady Justice,” which represents Krewe’s namesake—Themis, the Titan goddess of divine law and order— can also be found on the front plaza welcoming guests. Many of the handmade decorations were crafted from recyclable and sustainable materials.

“Our Krewe was beyond excited to decorate the front of the Zoo and help share the Mardi Gras spirit,” said Krewe of Themis President Judge Kimya M. Holmes. “We have loved coming together as a Krewe this year to spread a little happiness throughout the area.”

Krewe members’ time and effort as well as all decorating materials were generously donated by the Krewe. Guest are invited to drive by the Zoo to take pictures with the spectacularly decorated Zoo front entrance.

Audubon has also partnered with the Krewe of House Floats to use Audubon Zoo as a collection center for their Meals for Musicians Food Drive. A collection box for non-perishable foods is located at the front entrance of the Zoo, where guests are welcome to drop off non-perishable foods throughout Carnival season to help feed musicians.

In addition to the food drive, Audubon, the Krewe of House Floats, and Zatarain’s Smoked Sausage have partnered to host a free community meal pick-up day in Audubon Zoo’s parking lot. They will provide a free jambalaya meal kit to the first 500 cars that drive through the socially-distanced distribution event hosted at the Zoo on Friday, February 12, 7-9 a.m. The meal kit will include a package of Zatarain’s Smoked Sausage and two boxes of Zatarain’s jambalaya mix, plus other goodies.

Audubon is working with the Krewe of Red Beans as well, selling Krewe of Red Beans glitter medallions and hoodies in the Zoo's Audubon Marketplace gift shop and online as part of their “hire a Mardi Gras artist” initiative. The Krewe of Red Beans is partnering with local artists to design unique Mardi Gras 2021 commemorative art, which is applied to a line of products that are being sold exclusively on Magazine Street and providing employment for local musicians.

Forman added, “Our community means everything to us, and we want to give back to show our thanks for the support we have received throughout this past year.”

“We can’t wait to welcome our campers back this summer,” said Audubon’s Director of Education, Llewellyn Everage. “Campers will explore nature and science as we play in the Zoo and meet amazing animals. It is going to be a wild and wonderful summer!” 

Audubon has updated the camp experience this year to offer smaller group sizes, more personalized instruction, and a limited number of campers each week. Updated safety policies and procedures include: 

• Face coverings will be required for all children throughout the camp day. Strategic mask breaks will be taken when outdoors and when social distancing can be maintained.  
• Groups with children six-years-old and older will be capped at 16 campers per group with a 1:8 instructor ratio.  
• Groups with children ages four to six-year-old will be capped at 18 campers per group with a 1:6 instructor ratio. 
• Zoo Campers will be kept within their group—like a school pod—throughout the week to reduce potential exposures to illness.  
• If siblings or children who share a household are registered for the same week of camp, they will be assigned to the same group.  
• Cleanliness of classrooms and equipment will be maintained daily in accordance with CDC guidelines and recommendations. 
• If there is a reported case of COVID-19 within a camper’s group, Audubon will immediately notify the designated guardian, send campers home, and issue pro-rated refunds for any missed days of camp. 

Campers enjoy the Zoo as their playground as they discover wild animals, wild places, and what people are doing to protect the natural world. Summer camp at Audubon Zoo unites children through experiences that make a positive impact on the natural world. It is through these experiences that campers learn to embrace action and realize that when they help the natural world, they improve the world around them. 

“We are excited to renew the Community Connect program for a third year,” said Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and General Counsel Rebecca Dietz. “Increased and equitable access for all residents to Audubon Nature Institute facilities is a high priority for Audubon.” 

The Audubon Community Connect program consists of three components: 

1. Orleans Parish Appreciation Days: Orleans Parish residents receive free admission to Audubon facilities for themselves and up to four guests when they present a valid government-issued photo ID. Days rotate between the Aquarium and Zoo. On the first Thursday of the month, Orleans Parish residents receive free admission to the Aquarium, and on the third Wednesday of the month residents receive free admission to the Zoo. Visit this link to see the entire 2021 Orleans Parish Appreciation Day Calendar. Orleans Parish residents will be able to make timed ticketed reservations in advance online. 

2. Audubon SNAP Program: Orleans Parish SNAP benefit recipients receive free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium year-round (special events restrictions apply). SNAP participants and up to four guests receive free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium when they present a valid ID that matches their SNAP card. SNAP recipients are able to make timed ticketed reservations in advance online.  

3. Audubon Museum Partner Pass: Audubon has partnered with New Orleans Public Library to offer a partner pass available for checkout by library cardholders. Three passes have been provided to each library in Orleans Parish, and each pass provides free admission to the Zoo and Aquarium for up to two adults and seven children for a two-week period.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Parish, Jefferson Parish residents and government employees (regardless of residency) can visit Audubon Zoo and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas for half the regular ticket price (adult or child) on December 12.

Audubon Nature Institute is facing a financial crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic and needs assistance from the community to help care for more than 15,000 animals and aquatic species. 

“We provide some of the highest quality, nutritious diets for the animals in our care including a wide variety of fresh produce, quality meats, and sustainably harvested seafood,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “Feeding animals such as giraffe, sea otters, lions, and gorillas is a significant cost—nearly $70,000 a month.”

Audubon is one of a handful of the nation’s top nonprofit zoos and aquariums that are ineligible to benefit from any of the forgivable COVID-19 relief packages because of its pre-COVID number of employees and annual revenue. 

Audubon typically welcomes 750,000 visitors over the summer months and is estimating nearly an 80% decrease this year due to limited capacity, pausing groups and field trips, and decreased tourism visitation. Audubon’s estimated loss of revenue directly related to its facility closures from March to June was approximately $21M. Audubon has reduced its staff by close to 75%, laying off over 500 full time and part time employees. 

Once CWN, TMMSN, and NOAA responders arrived onsite and assessed the situation, a successful rescue effort ensued. Following a physical exam, the dolphin was deemed releasable and transported back to the Gulf of Mexico. 

“This was a multi-day and multi-organizational effort to rescue, transport, and release this bottlenose dolphin,” said Audubon Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding, Rescue, and Rehab Coordinator Gabriella Harlamert. “All these agencies came together for the common goal of making a positive impact on the natural world.” 

CWN anticipates more reports of animal strandings in the coming months in relation to the aftermath of Hurricane Laura. Hurricanes may result in increased marine mammal strandings due to storm surge and coastal flooding. It is possible for live marine mammals to strand on the beach or be further inland in waterways they usually are not found.

• Leave all entanglements that may be present on the animal

SNAP and D-SNAP recipients will be able to make timed ticketed in advance online reservations for up to six guests and will be asked to show a valid government-issued photo ID that matches their SNAP card and D-SNAP proof of benefits, in addition to the generated reservation barcodes at the Zoo and Aquarium front gate for entry.

These virtual programs allow students to discover amazing animals with Audubon educators as they explore nature and science together. Each class is designed to last up to 45 minutes and will combine science topics aligned with Louisiana state science standards and live animal presentations.

Students can interact in real time with educators and live animals through streaming video conferencing as they discover new things about the world around them.

Audubon Zoo reopened on June 3, 2020, following a nearly three-month closure and Audubon Aquarium of the Americas reopened on July 16, 2020, following a four-month closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following State and City public health directives, Audubon is reopening its family of parks and museums following a phased approach that strictly limits attendance and programming. Advance tickets to the Zoo and Aquarium are required and can be reserved here. 

Audubon Riverview Park will reopen on Saturday, May 16, to pedestrian and bicycle traffic only. Vehicular traffic will not be allowed. Audubon Tennis will reopen Wednesday, May 20, with a limited schedule and appropriate social distancing measures. Audubon Golf Course will remain closed at this time, and more information on plans for its reopening will be announced soon.

Planning is underway to reopen Audubon Zoo in early June.

“We have been preparing to reopen for several weeks,” said Audubon Chief Operating Office Kyle Burks. “From stringent cleaning protocols to removing unnecessary touchpoints, Audubon is committed to providing a safe experience for visitors. We want to take every precaution as we reopen our facilities and appreciate the community’s patience as we carefully begin to open our doors up to the public.”

Audubon has consulted with experts at zoos and aquarium across the country as well as with local museums and attractions and health officials to develop a comprehensive reopening plan that will ensure the health and safety of its visitors, staff, volunteers, and animals.

Burks added, “Part of our reopening plan and a requirement of the City is for Audubon to take online reservations. Online tickets will be required for all guests, including Audubon Members. Our new timed admission protocol is critical to limiting the number of guests in our facilities at any time and supporting increased physical distancing.”

Along with attendance limits, other safety initiatives include requiring staff to wear masks in public spaces, stringent cleaning protocols, and physical distancing signage.

Key protocols include:

• Limiting the number of guests to 25% of the facility’s capacity

• Requiring and enforcing physical distancing of six feet or more

• Preventing the gathering of any group of more than 10 people

• Restricting close contact through clear and enforced physical distancing guidelines

• Communicating new safety protocols with mandated training for every Audubon employee

• Providing PPE to employees

Audubon will be releasing more details of its phased reopening plan in the coming weeks along with dates for the reopening of Audubon Louisiana Nature Center and Audubon’s other admission-based facilities.

“Now, more than ever, the community needs to reconnect,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “As we open our doors to our community, we want the animals and parks in our care to inspire hope and connect our guests to the natural world during a time when we have all experienced uncertainty and grief. We look forward to sharing a joyful homecoming that we hope will offer our community some comfort in this difficult time.”

While Audubon facilities work to reopen, supporters can help the dedicated staff who continue to provide outstanding care for the animals that they love by donating to the Audubon Recovery Fund.

Audubon’s website also includes a variety of fun activities to celebrate the day and honor mom. There is a list of Audubon restaurant partners, a card for the kiddos to download and decorate, and more.

Participants are invited to celebrate Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, World Ocean Day, and Pollinator Week beginning April 19.

Virtually follow along with each week’s activities by tuning into Audubon’s Facebook pages to discover imaginative new ways to experience nature, create healthy habitats, and help neighbors, big and small, from home!

“The global pandemic has emphasized the need for all of us around the world to work together to meet challenges and protect life on our planet,” says Regional Customer Service Manager for Entergy New Orleans Toni Green-Brown. “Participation in Party for the Planet’s virtual activities is an entertaining and educational way for families to broaden their understanding of the environment while staying at home. We hope everyone will enjoy this creative way to celebrate and participate in the 50^th anniversary of Earth Day.”

The virtual Party for the Planet presented by Entergy series includes:

• Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Earth Week: April 19-26
• Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Endangered Species Week: May 10-16
• Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: World Oceans Week: June 7-13
• Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Pollination Celebration Week: June 20-27

At the end of the series, participants can download the Party for the Planet Passport available on Audubon’s website. The passport will include a quiz covering topics included in Audubon’s videos covering topics such as pollinators and ocean health. Visitors can bring a copy of their passport to Audubon Zoo once it has reopened to receive special prizes. This date will be announced at a later time.

This series is supported by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, which directs $1 million annually to environmental improvement projects. Party for the Planet is part of Entergy’s recognition of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited zoos and aquariums across North America are throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Oceans Day celebration. Party for the Planet offers families unique opportunities to celebrate the Earth’s biodiversity and learn how they can make a difference.

While Audubon facilities are closed, supporters can help the dedicated staff who continue to provide outstanding care for the animals and the parks loved by the New Orleans community by donating to the Audubon Recovery Fund.

Sharing the natural world with a diverse audience is at the core of Audubon’s mission, and that is what this series plans to accomplish. Audubon wants to continue to inspire the next generation of conservation heroes by expanding the horizons of how zoos and aquariums interact with and inspire their communities during these trying times.
