Celebración Latina presented by Pan-American Life Insurance Group will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, during regular Zoo hours (10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) There will be music throughout the day, and guests can grab delicious Latin American food and enjoy delicious street-style favorites made with vibrant ingredients and inspired by traditional recipes from across Latin America. Food vendors include Tia Marias, Waska Latin Kitchen, De la Guera Food Truck, and Mimas Peruvian Desserts.

Audubon Zoo is home to many animals from Central America. While enjoying the Celebración Latina festivities, visitors can stroll through the Zoo and explore Jaguar Jungle to see many fascinating animals including jaguars, peccary, spider monkeys, and alpacas. There are several young capybaras in Jaguar Jungle’s Rivers Edge that are always a crowd favorite.

Again this year, Audubon Zoo will host an Audubon Animal Ofrenda as part of this event. An ofrenda is a traditional memorial display that honors those who have passed with remembrance and celebration. In recognition of this meaningful tradition, this Ofrenda honors the beloved animals that have been part of the Audubon family and celebrates their impact and legacy.

Festivities on Sunday, May 10, 2026, include lots of family-friendly activities celebrating moms – both human and animal!  Some of the special Mother’s Day activities include making seed balls for pollinators that guests can take home or leave for the Zoo to plant.

Guests can also create and sign Mother’s Day cards for some of our animal moms. The Zoo has lots of moms with new babies right now. Here are just a few:

·        Capybara

Mom Turkey the capybara in Jaguar Jungle  River’s Edge has eight babies! The newest arrivals are named for the “Powerpuff Girls” cartoon characters: Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, Mojo, and Jojo. Older siblings Charlotte, Tiana, and Louis were named for characters in Disney’s “Princess and the Frog,” the Louisiana-based animated movie.  

·        Lions

Lion mom Kali has three active cubs keeping her on her toes. Tatu, Nandi, and Zawadi were born in October 2025, and love to play together, exploring their habitat, and jumping on their older family members.

·        Golden Lion Tamarins

Golden Lion Tamarin mom Ipa has a new set of twins. You’ll have to look closely to spot the infants, as they are small and cling tightly to their parents, blending into their golden fur. It is still too early to determine the sex of these tiny and adorable babies.

·        White Faced Saki Monkey

Little Magnolia the White Faced Sake Monkey is just one year old, and still considered a juvenile. She was born in March of 2025 and can be seen in the World of Primates with mom Selva and dad, Smith.

·        Orangutan

 The three young orangutans in our troop are growing fast and now are more independent of their moms, but Bulan (born in 2019), Madu (born in 2021), and Roux (born in 2021) are still considered youngsters. Roux’s mom Menari was also born at Audubon Zoo in 2009. 

Celebrating Mother’s Day at Audubon Zoo is a beloved tradition in New Orleans. Audubon All-Access and Zoo-only members always get in free and will also enjoy an exclusive concert viewing area on Mother’s Day and special gift for moms while supplies last

Audubon experts, a variety of conservation partners, and the community will be at the Aquarium to celebrate and share information about how people can take action to help animals and the world ocean.  

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, special World Ocean Day activities will take place at Audubon Aquarium from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Guests can watch feeding time for the sharks and penguins, chat with keepers located throughout the facility about the animals in their care and visit with local conservation groups.

World Ocean Day is part of Party for the Planet presented by Entergy and is one of a five-part series of conservation focused events. In addition to Aquarium activities, multiple conservation partners will be on hand to highlight the work they are doing and encourage people to get involved.

Later this month, Pollination Celebration will take place at Audubon Insectarium, highlighting the important role that pollinators like bees play in our lives. Pollination Celebration is set for Saturday, June 28, 2025, with more fun activities and learning experiences for guests.  

This conservation series is supported by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, which directs $1 million annually to environmental improvement projects.

A visit to an Audubon Nature Institute attraction is a first step in taking positive action to learn about and protect the environment. Audubon joins many other Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos and aquariums across North America in throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Ocean Day celebration. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums spend $230 million on field conservation alone, supporting projects benefiting more than 800 species in 130 countries. To date, the AZA Conservation Grants Fund has provided $7.7 million in support for 400+ projects worldwide.

This special springtime celebration is included with Aquarium admission or Audubon membership. Guests can meet the Easter Bunny at the downtown attraction from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on these dates:

The Easter Bunny is happy to pose for photos with guests of all ages, no purchase of photos is required. Photos can be taken with personal phones or cameras. The mermaids can be seen diving in the Great Maya Reef exhibit at Audubon Aquarium along with stingrays and scores of colorful tropical fish. The mermaids will dive throughout the day and guests will also have a chance to take a photo with a mermaid when they are on dry land!

Mermaids will be at the Aquarium Thursday – Sunday on these dates:

Each mermaid has her own unique conservation message that is near and dear to her and will engage with guests about the importance of ocean conservation. In water or on dry land, Wands & Wishes Mermaids represent the connection of humans to the sea. They are committed to delivering a realistic, memorable mermaid experience for guests of all ages to enjoy. Ocean conservation, marine animal protection and education are close their hearts and they incorporate educational information into each magical visit.

“It is thrilling to watch the mermaids perform at the Aquarium,” said Rich Toth, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Audubon Aquarium. “Their conservation messages are important to share with guests and we hope everyone leaves the Aquarium understanding ways they can help protect the oceans.”

Watching the mermaids glide beneath the waters of the Great Maya Reef is included with Aquarium admission. Audubon Aquarium is open from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily.

The spooktacular fun at Boo at the Zoo is three days full of fun. Kids under age 12 can trick or treat throughout the Zoo, and all guests are invited to wear their favorite costumes to enjoy the festivities. The Zoo animals will get special pumpkin treats throughout the weekend, so be on the lookout for signs showing when and where the animals will get their pumpkins!

This daytime event will be held Friday, October 18, through Sunday, October 20, 2024, during regular Audubon Zoo hours (10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). The last entry ticket is sold at 4:00 p.m. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online for the specific date they plan to attend.

Children and families can enjoy visiting trick or treat stations located throughout the zoo to collect candy that is do not harm orangutans in the wild. Boo at the Zoo only distributes candy made with sustainable palm oil to protect the zoo animals and their habitats. Habitat destruction due to unsustainable cutting of forests for palm oil is threatening the health and survival of wildlife, and Audubon Nature Institute is committed to making a positive impact on the natural world.

“Visiting Audubon Zoo for Boo at the Zoo is fun for the entire family. Not only do the little ones enjoy trick or treating, but our animals get to have some unique Halloween activities as well,” said Ron Forman, President and CEO of Audubon Nature Institute. “We are thankful for our partners at Valero and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans are important parts of making this event happen for the young people of our community.”

The shared vision for Audubon Zoo and Children’s Hospital New Orleans is to build a happier, healthier, and more sustainable future for the kids and families of Louisiana. The long-standing relationship will continue thanks to a new agreement between Audubon Nature Institute and Children’s Hospital New Orleans that will extend Children’s Hospital New Orleans involvement with Boo at the Zoo, sponsorship of Zoo-to-Do for Kids as well sponsoring part of an upcoming giraffe exhibit at Audubon Zoo.

Money raised by the event benefits both Audubon Zoo and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.

“For 70 years, Children’s Hospital New Orleans has supported the health and wellbeing of our community as the only freestanding, comprehensive Children’s Hospital serving the children of Louisiana and the Gulf South,” said Children’s Hospital New Orleans President and CEO Lucio A. Fragoso. “Boo at the Zoo is a New Orleans tradition that gives families the opportunity to get out and nature and time together, while supporting two important community causes – the missions of Children’s Hospital and Audubon Nature Institute. We encourage everyone to come out and join in the fun this year.”

Audubon Zoo admission includes access to all Halloween activities. Tickets are required for both Audubon Members and non-members. As they enjoy the best regional cuisine and beverages, guests will enjoy live music from local bands, along with stunning views of the Mississippi River, and access to both the Aquarium and Insectarium. Throughout the evening, attendees can participate in a silent auction, featuring unique experiences and items that support Audubon’s conservation mission.

Scales & Ales attendees will also be the first to experience Audubon Aquarium’s new Deep Dive into the Gulf exhibit that spotlights the mysterious world of the deep sea in the Gulf of Mexico. This exhibit showcases vibrant and complex coral communities and the efforts underway to help them recover from the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill as part of the ongoing Mesophotic and Deep Benthic Communities (MDBC) restoration projects. Experts from these projects will be at the event to shed light on these important habitats and the ongoing restoration work. The new exhibit was made possible through a grant from the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation with funding to restore natural resources injured by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill from the DWH Open Ocean Trustees.

"Scales & Ales has always been a celebration of marine life, and we’re thrilled to use this event to showcase the important work being done to restore the Gulf’s deep-sea habitats," said Rich Toth, Senior Vice President and Director of Audubon Aquarium. "Through this new exhibit, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the incredible diversity of life found beneath the surface of the Gulf, and to educate our community about the critical need for conservation and restoration."

Familiar characters from one of the world’s most popular video games are coming to New Orleans’ Audubon Aquarium this summer as part of an innovative partnership with Nintendo of America. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is one of the most popular and highest-selling games in the world, and its connection with aquarium animals makes this a natural fit for Audubon Aquarium, Nintendo of America, and those who enjoy experiencing both.

Starting June 21, 2024, and running through September 14, visitors to Audubon Aquarium will have the opportunity to enjoy characters from the video game while exploring animals of the natural world. Nintendo of America is partnering with Audubon Aquarium in a first-of-its-kind traveling exhibit that showcases animals in real life at the riverfront attraction and animals they encounter while playing the game.

Next month, two Party for the Planet presented by Entergy celebrations will take place. Guests can learn about the aquatic world during World Ocean Day at Audubon Aquarium on Saturday, June 8, 2024. A Pollination Celebration will happen at Audubon Insectarium on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

This series is supported by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, which directs $1 million annually to environmental improvement projects.

A visit to an Audubon Nature Institute attraction is a first step in taking positive action to learn about and protect the environment. Audubon joins many other Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos and aquariums across North America in throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Oceans Day celebration. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums spend $230 million on field conservation alone, supporting projects benefiting more than 800 species in 130 countries. To date, the AZA Conservation Grants Fund has provided $7.7 million in support for 400+ projects worldwide.

Hancock Whitney Zoo-to-Do this year celebrates the 100th anniversary of the historic Odenheimer Complex at Audubon Zoo as well as Audubon’s Louisiana pine snake conservation efforts.

Party for the Planet presented by Entergy starts with Spring into Action at Audubon Louisiana Nature Center on March 30, 2024. Guests can enjoy nature-themed activities, hands-on discovery and interactive experiences that promote environmental awareness, and special programming at the Nature Center Planetarium.

It is free to attend, and the event runs from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

One of the most exciting parts of Spring into Action is the chance to engage with a variety of groups working to make the world a better place. The events celebrate an important milestone in the history of Audubon Zoo – the 100^th anniversary of the historic Odenheimer Complex. Built in 1924, the domed structure at the Complex’s center was the original Audubon Aquarium and one of the early Zoo’s most popular attractions. The complex is named for philanthropist Sigmund Odenheimer, whose immense support in the 1920s helped shape Audubon Zoo into the landmark it is today. Throughout the years, the complex has been expanded to incorporate additional exhibits, including Audubon’s Reptile Encounter and Wings of the World, which opened last spring.

“Zoo guests have enjoyed this beautiful part of the Zoo for a century,” said Ron Forman, Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO. “We plan to begin renovations on the historic Odenheimer rotunda later this year to preserve it for future generations to enjoy and make connections with each other and nature for years to come.” Forman has led Audubon Nature Institute for nearly 53 years and steps down from his current position at the end of 2024. Under his lengthy tenure, Zoo-to-Do events have raised more than $40 million dollars benefiting Audubon Zoo and its conservation work.

The 2024 Zoo-To-Do events also highlight one of the rarest snakes in the United States and Audubon’s efforts to save them. Due to habitat loss, the population of Louisiana pine snakes is rapidly declining. As part of the Louisiana Pine Snake Conservation and Recovery Program, Audubon’s reptile team has successfully hatched hundreds of the endangered snakes and released them into the wild.

This year, the event Chair is Helen Nalty Butcher.

The younger set has their turn to celebrate on Friday, Apil 26, 2024 at Zoo-to-Do for Kids presented by Children’s Hospital of New Orleans. They can party the evening away with games, giant inflatables, live entertainment, arts & crafts and delicious sips and snacks.  Meredith Claiborne serves as this year’s Chair for the popular event.

In addition to passing a good time, this event will educate visitors about wetlands and wildlife conservation, and how important those efforts are. Three of the most popular residents in the Louisiana Swamp Exhibit will be enjoying the day as they play and explore their home - Sassafras the Louisiana black bear cub along with two North American black bear cubs from Anchorage, Alaska. 

The Louisiana black bear has moved off the endangered list thanks to the work of wildlife experts, landowners, and everyday citizens who help protect bears, and its recovery is a symbol of effective wildlife management and the value of protection under the Endangered Species Act. Also, Louisiana’s official state mammal is the Louisiana black bear!

Wild Encounters is a brand new experience at all three Audubon Nature Institute facilities – Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium, and Audubon Insectarium. For an additional fee, guests will have an exclusive encounter with some of their favorite Audubon animals. 

Audubon Nature Institute Wild Encounters are special, unique encounters and no two are alike. All are designed to be memorable, educational – and fun! Guests will learn directly from team members who work with the animals in our care, providing insights on their specific needs, enrichment activities, food preferences, conservation status in the wild, and more.

Butterfly First Flight – Learn about how Audubon raises butterflies and moths for the Insectarium and release a butterfly into the Insectarium’s Butterfly Garden and watch as it glides through the lush foliage in its new home.

Alpaca Palooza – Get up close with these unique South American animals where you’ll be able to learn why fibers from their coats are so prized. You’ll be their favorite visitor when you give them a snack. 
Jammin with Jaguar –Go behind the scenes and help feed one of Audubon’s jaguars and learn about this beautiful animal. For this Wild Encounter, you’ll wear a face mask to keep the jaguars healthy. 
Orangutan Family Fun – Learn about our orangutan family and watch as they interact with each other, display in their version of acrobatics, and engage with their care team – and you! 
Sea Lion Splash – Tour their special kitchen, check out their diet and get up-close as they work with their skilled care team in training sessions. 
Black Bear Bonanza – Accompany keepers in the Louisiana Swamp as they work with and feed Audubon’s three young female black bears. 
Giant Tortoise Adventure – Meet Audubon’s oldest resident and learn more about this fascinating species that can live a century or more.

Boo at the Zoo is three days filled with spooky fun! The event will be held Friday, October 20, through Sunday, October 22, 2023, during regular Audubon Zoo hours (10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Last entry ticket is sold at 4:00 p.m. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online for the specific date you plan to attend. Children and families can expect to visit trick or treat stations located throughout the zoo to collect candy that is made with sustainable palm oil to protect the zoo animals and their habitats. Other activities will include animal experiences, face painting, arts and crafts to make and take home, a spooky haunted house, an A-Maze-ing Maze, and more!

Audubon Zoo and Children’s Hospital New Orleans’ shared vision is to build a happier, healthier, and more sustainable future for the kids and families of Louisiana. The ongoing support from community events like Boo at the Zoo is instrumental in making that vision possible.

The candy distributed at Boo at the Zoo is made from sustainable palm oil. In many parts of the world, the habitat for animals including orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants is destroyed because forests are being cut down to make way for palm oil plantations. Only buying and using products made with sustainably farmed palm oil can make a big difference for animals in the wild. 

Money raised by the event benefits both Audubon Zoo and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.

ZOObilation is an afternoon of family fun, and it is FREE and open only for Audubon Nature Institute Members. The Members-only afternoon begins at 4:30 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.

Members will enjoy after-hours access to Audubon Zoo with activities for all ages, exclusive experiences and special discounts including extra discounts on Zoo concessions, gift shops, and souvenir photo purchases. The popular Swamp Train rides are free during this event, and special animal encounters, feedings, and chats will take place throughout the Zoo. Members will get to tour the animal hospital and commissary and see what goes on behind the scenes to keep Zoo residents healthy and well fed.

Audubon Members do not need an advanced reservation for this event, they can just show their digital Membership card and photo ID to get in. Taylor Scholars receive free admission and may bring up to two guests with them.

Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome at ZOObilation, there will be live music by Ray’s Islands Sound during the event. No outside food, beverages, coolers, ice-chests, or tents are allowed. Guest passes are not accepted at this event. The Zoo will close at 3:00 p.m. on September 21, 2023, to prepare for ZOObilation.

Celebración Latina will offer a true taste of the Latin American culture with Latin cuisine prepared and sold by New Orleans area restaurants, live music, special conservation programming and activities. The celebration lasts from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the last ticket sold for Zoo admission will be at 4:00 p.m. 
 

A full day of live entertainment kicks off with popular salsa band Muevelo at 11:00 a.m., music continues throughout the day and concludes with Los Güiros at 3:30 p.m. All music performances will be on the Zoo’s Capital One Stage.

Taylor Scholars are invited to bring up to four guests with them and enjoy a complimentary visit to Audubon Zoo on the annual Taylor Family Free Day. With their Taylor Card, Taylor Students and Scholars also receive discounts on purchases at Audubon gift shops and concessions. 

The Taylor Scholars Awards Program is a statewide program that rewards students in grades six through 12 with a GPA of 2.5 or higher with complimentary access to Audubon Zoo, Audubon Aquarium, Audubon Insectarium and New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA).  During the 2022-2023 academic year, more than 240,000 students from across the state were recognized for academic excellence with these awards.

Through the Taylor Scholars Awards Program, the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation strives to encourage young people to excel in the classroom. On Monday, July 24, 2023, Audubon Commission will host a public meeting to provide an opportunity for the public to offer input on a draft of the schematic plans for development of the wharves into park and recreational space benefiting the community. This meeting will be held in the Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium event space, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and is the final meeting prior to the submission of schematic plans to the City in early August. 

Delayed due to Covid, the plan harnesses the creative vision of Reinventing the Crescent and involves several governmental agencies and community associations in the area, including the City, working with Audubon Commission to convert the wharves into public park space. 

Riverfront for All will create one of the largest contiguous riverfront parks in the nation. The project is the final link from Crescent Park in the Bywater neighborhood to Spanish Plaza at the foot of Canal Street. 

"The history of New Orleans was written along the banks of the Mississippi River, creating a park that spans  two and a quarter miles, giving locals and visitors to the city a new experience on the riverfront,” said J. Kelly Duncan, Audubon Commission President. 

Audubon is partnering with Eskew + Dumez + Ripple, a widely recognized architectural firm known for planning projects with a dedication to community outreach, to design the space. 

The community feedback phase for this project began in 2018 with several meetings held across the city. The planning process has incorporated public input and involved examining alternatives to address recent nearby riverfront improvements, a review of comparative analysis of other successful waterfronts worldwide, and concept development. The submission and approval of the schematic plan are the next steps in the development process before design and construction processes get underway. 

If approved, construction could begin as soon as August 2024. 
 

Party for the Planet is presented by Entergy and starts with “Spring Into Action” at Audubon Louisiana Nature Center on April 1, 2023. Guests at this event and others in the series can enjoy activities, hands-on discovery and interactive experiences that promote environmental awareness. It is free to attend, and runs from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

This year, Audubon Louisiana Nature Center will recognize Grayhawk Perkins as a special Cultural Naturalist during Spring Into Action. Perkins is a well-known musician, performer and tribal storyteller with background in both the Choctaw and United Houma Native Nations. He recently was awarded the title of Cultural Standard Bearer for Louisiana from the Lieutenant Governor’s Office. Perkins will perform throughout the Nature Center event.

“We look forward to this event every year,” said Audubon Louisiana Nature Center Director of Operations Isaac Wyatt. “Spring Into Action gives our guests a chance to explore the Nature Center, learn from our conservation partners, and connection with nature in new and exciting ways.”  

Guests can take part in fun opportunities to experience the natural world including hearing from a NASA Solar System Ambassador, attend a workshop hosted by Waterwise, learn about the soon-to-reopen Audubon Insectarium, and many more activities connecting guests to nature. Admission to this event is free to the public. 

“When we provide opportunities to help people learn about sustainability and conservation, our surrounding communities benefit,” said Deanna Rodriguez, President and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “An important part of a clean energy future includes protecting our natural resources that exist today. That’s why we continue to partner with the Audubon Nature Institute to encourage everyone to help take care of our environment.”

Through a partnership with the City of New Orleans, Entergy New Orleans has placed free to use public electric vehicle charging stations throughout the city. Several electric vehicles will be on display at Spring Into Action, Entergy representatives will be on site to talk about the vehicles and how they can make a difference in the community and can help the city reach its clean energy goals. Audubon Zoo has two free electric vehicle charging stations, and two additional chargers are located on The Fly along the riverfront near the zoo.

Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do will be Friday, April 28th, and Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans will be Friday, April 21st.  Sponsor,  Patron and general admission tickets for both events are on sale now. 

Spider monkeys are an important part of the tropical rainforest ecosystem. Usually found in the rainforest canopy, they play key roles in spreading seeds around the forest keeping it alive and flourishing. Habitat loss is the major threat to spider monkeys in the wild, and they are listed as an endangered species by the International Union of Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species which means there is a very high chance they could go extinct in the near future. In just the past 45 years, their numbers in the wild have dropped by 50%.

The Zoo is collecting string lights for recycling now through January 9, 2023. Participating is as easy as bringing your old lights to the Zoo and tossing them in a donation box at the front entrance.  

Lions are a favorite animal of Zoo visitors, and sadly their numbers in the wild are declining at an alarming rate. In just a quarter century, the wild African lion population has dropped by half.  The main threats to African lions are conflicts with humans, poaching, and the decline of their natural prey as well as habitat loss, climate change and illegal wildlife trade. With around 23,000 African lions left in the wild, they are now officially classified as 'vulnerable'. Their loss signals the loss of the wild in Africa.

All proceeds from Audubon’s "Lights for Lions“ recycling program will support the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund. Every string of lights donated makes a difference.  The Lion Recovery Fund hopes to increase the numbers of wild lions by protecting them, their prey and their habitat.

“The ‘Lights for Lions’ project is a conservation project that benefits wild lions and our local community,” said Daine Appleberry, Senior Vice President and Director of Operations at Audubon Zoo & Park. “It provides a way to recycle old, unused, or faulty lights instead of them ending up in the landfill, and our community members know they are helping save animals in the wild.” 

Most string lights are not bio-degradable and are dangerous to animals if they get tangled in the strands. The drop box for the “Lights for Lions” project is at the front entrance at Audubon Zoo.

In addition to the great music, food, and native Louisiana arts and crafts, guests can learn about the importance of conservation efforts for wetlands and the animals who live there.  There are three very special residents now living in the Louisiana Swamp exhibit that are enjoying their first Swamp Fête.

Three young black bear cubs are busy exploring and playing in their exhibit in the swamp. The smallest of the cubs is Sassafras, a Louisiana black bear cub found alone earlier this year in North Louisiana. She’s joined by a pair of black bear sisters recently orphaned and relocated to New Orleans from Alaska.  The cubs will grow up together in the swamp exhibit, showcasing the importance of work between wildlife experts, landowners, and everyday citizens who help protect bears. The Louisiana black bear’s recovery is a symbol of effective wildlife management and the value of protection under the Endangered Species Act. Also, Louisiana’s official state mammal is the Louisiana black bear!

Swamp Fête is included with Zoo admission and complimentary for Audubon Nature Institute Members.

These mermaids will dive beneath the waters of the Great Maya Reef Audubon Aquarium of the Americas next month to engage and educate guests about ocean conservation.  Guests at the Aquarium can see the mermaids swimming with tropical fish and stingrays from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on these dates:

Guests can also meet a mermaid up-close, have professional photos taken with them, and talk with them about ocean conservation.  These special mermaid appearances give guests a fun-filled experience at Audubon Aquarium before it temporarily closes at the end of November while undergoing a major renovation.

In water or on dry land, Wands & Wishes Mermaids represent the connection of humans to the sea and are committed to delivering a realistic, memorable mermaid experience for all ages. Ocean conservation, marine animal protection and education are close their hearts and they incorporate educational information into each magical visit.

Audubon Aquarium has delighted guests for more than 30 years along the New Orleans riverfront. The upcoming renovation project adds new and different animals to the collection, exciting new exhibits, and includes Audubon Insectarium’s relocation into the Aquarium building. This is the first major renovation project since the Aquarium opened in 1990.  The Aquarium will reopen in summer 2023.

Boo at the Zoo will be held Friday, October 21, 2022 through Sunday, October 23,2022 during regular Audubon Zoo hours (10:00 a.m.  5:00 p.m.). Last entry ticket is sold at 4:00 p.m. Boo at the Zoo is fun for the entire family, plus is extra fun for some of your favorite Zoo animals.  Did you know Halloween pumpkins are a special treat for some of the Audubon Zoo animals? Keep an eye open at the event and you may see some animals enjoying a pumpkin snack of their own! 

Kids under age 12 can trick or treat throughout the Zoo, and all guests are invited to wear their favorite costumes to enjoy the festivities. Because Audubon Nature Institute is committed to making a positive impact on the natural world, the candy distributed at Boo at the Zoo is made from sustainable palm oil. In many parts of the world, habitat destruction due to cutting of forests for palm oil is threatening health and the survival of wildlife. Learning about how using sustainable resources can help do a world of good for orangutans in the wild

Halloween is a also the perfect time to learn about ways to help animals that may be in your backyard. Those who venture into the Nocturnal House at the Zoo will see bats and learn they aren’t so spooky after all.  Bats are an important part of a functioning ecosystem, especially for pollination and insect control. There are simple ways to attract – and keep – these creatures of the night doing their jobs in your neighborhood.

Money raised by the event benefits both Audubon Zoo and Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.  “Boo at the Zoo is a great way for families to make memories together, and it helps both the Zoo and Children’s Hospital build a brighter future for our community,” said President and CEO of Children’s Hospital New Orleans John R. Nickens IV.   

Audubon Zoo admission includes access to all Halloween activities. Tickets are required for both Audubon Members and Non-Members. Back by popular demand, Audubon Zoo is offering the Nature at Night "kid-only" events for children ages 6-12. Youngsters can enjoy a special animal experience, pizza party, an event-themed art project, and a flashlight tour of the Zoo. This series will be offered Friday and Saturday nights this fall starting Friday September 23^rd.

Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Spring into Action kicks off the series at Audubon Louisiana Nature Center on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  

“We are thrilled that Party for the Planet presented by Entergy will be back in-person this year, and we are proud to kick off the series at the Nature Center,” said Audubon Louisiana Nature Center Director of Operations Isaac Wyatt. “Each of us has the power to positively impact the natural world. Collectively, that impact can shape its future. Our Spring into Action event helps build real-world impact to make a measurable difference in the natural world. This event allows guests the chance to connect with nature in exciting ways and better understand the vital functions of our native ecosystem.” 

Guests can interact with local “conservation neighbors” and take part in fun opportunities to experience the natural world including a complimentary planetarium demonstration with a NASA Solar System Ambassador, workshop hosted by Waterwise, wildflower seed toss, and many more activities connecting guests to nature. Admission to this event is free to the public.

Many Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoos and aquariums across North America are throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Oceans Day celebration. A visit to an Audubon Nature Institute facility is a first step in taking positive action. AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums spend $220 million on field conservation alone, supporting more than 2,600 projects in 130 countries. To date, the AZA Conservation Grants Fund has provided $7.7 million in support for 400+ projects worldwide. 

The 44th annual Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do will be Friday, May 6, and the 33rd annual Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans will be Friday, April 29. Both events will celebrate Audubon’s conservation efforts for pollinators, the group of insects, mammals, and birds on which the future of life on Earth depends.

Vital to our environment’s health, pollinator species pollinate over 90% of the planet's flowering plants and one third of the human diet. All flowering plants need animals to move pollen to produce fruits and seeds.

Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo will be held Wednesday, October 20, through Sunday, October 24, during regular Zoo hours--10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This daytime celebration will provide fun for the whole family and some of the Zoo’s animals too, ensuring that guests create spooktacular memories. Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo guests are invited to wear their favorite costume as they partake in the festivities, including trick-or-treat stations located throughout the Zoo on Saturday and Sunday.

Per City and State mandates, however, proof of vaccination or a negative 72-hour PCR COVID-19 test and masks are required to enter any indoor facilities at the Zoo. Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo is complimentary for Audubon Members and included in general Zoo admission as Halloween lagniappe. There is no additional ticket or fee for this experience. All guests must purchase tickets in advance online for a specific date and entry time; Audubon Members must reserve their complimentary tickets online in advance as well. Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo will be held rain or shine.

Audubon Nature Institute also rescheduled Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children's Hospital New Orleans until Friday, November 12. Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children's Hospital New Orleans was originally scheduled to be held on Friday, September 10, 2021 at Audubon Zoo.

Tickets purchased for the originally scheduled events will be transferred to the new event dates.

“While recent events have closed our facilities and cancelled events, we are committed to the well-being of your animals and our community's successful recovery,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “We look forward to welcoming supporters to our mission-focused fundraisers, but at this time rescheduling these events is the right thing to do. Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children's Hospital New Orleans was scheduled to be held on Friday, September 10, 2021, at Audubon Zoo. Audubon is working closely with long-time partner Children’s Hospital to determine the best plan moving forward.  

“We are disappointed that we won’t be able to enjoy Zoo-to-Do for Kids as originally planned, but are hopeful that by following safety protocol and continuing to encourage our community to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, it will be safe for us to gather together again soon, and celebrate all that this wonderful event has to offer for families across our community,” said President and CEO of Children’s Hospital New Orleans John R. Nickens IV.

Blankets, lawn chairs, and wagons are welcome at ZOObiliation. No outside food, beverages, or tents are allowed. Guest passes are not accepted at this event. The Zoo will close at 3 p.m. on June 9 to prepare for ZOObilation. 

The virtual festivities kick off during Earth Week on April 18 and run through June 27. Virtual events include taking action on Endangered Species Day, World Oceans Day, and Pollinator Week.  

Families can virtually follow along with activities by tuning into Audubon’s social media channels to discover imaginative new ways to experience nature, create healthy habitats, and help neighbors, big and small, from home.

Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoos and aquariums across North America are throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Oceans Day celebration. Party for the Planet offers families unique opportunities to celebrate the Earth’s biodiversity and learn how they can make a difference. 

The 43rd annual Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do will be Friday, September 17, and the 32nd annual Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans will be Friday, September 10. Tickets for both events will go on sale April 30.  

“Hancock Whitney Zoo-to-Do has long been the premiere event in the city and we are thrilled that we will be returning in the fall,” said Hancock Whitney Senior Regional President Gary Lorio. “Our long-time partnership with Audubon allows us to focus on protection of the world’s most threatened species, and we are honored be a part of the whooping crane conservation efforts.” 

The 2021 events celebrate Audubon’s conservation efforts for whooping cranes, an endangered species that neared extinction in the 1940s. Audubon has long been a leader in conservation of these majestic birds and continues to work on their behalf through the Alliance for Sustainable Wildlife, Audubon’s conservation breeding partnership with San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. 

Audubon Zoo serves as an important source of inspiration and passion for whooping crane conservation by offering opportunities for guests to see these graceful creatures in person at the whooping crane habitat, where a pair of cranes serve as ambassadors for their species.  

“Each of us has the power to impact the natural world—for better or for worse,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. "The funds raised through our Zoo-To-Do events support Audubon's facilities and programming that inspire our community to take positive action and leave the natural world better than they found it." 

Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do on September 17 will feature a more intimate setting than in years past. Sponsor and Patron Admission begins at 7 p.m., and the party goes until 11 p.m. Hancock Whitney is once again the Title Sponsor for the adults-only fundraiser that features delectable cuisine from local restaurants and Audubon Catering and premium cocktails. 

Audubon is honored to have Dr. Leslie P. Gottsegen chair the 2021 Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do and Betsy T. Laborde chair the 2021 Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children’s Hospital New Orleans. 

The Zoo-To-Do events will be social-distancing-friendly events that will offer a limited number of tickets for sale for each event in order to adhere to safety measures and ensure guest and staff well-being. The events will follow City, State, and U.S. Center for Disease Control's guidelines for safety. Due to the changing nature of these guidelines, restrictions, and protocols will be determined closer to the event date. 

In commemoration of the original date of Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do, the public can participate in Audubon’s Zoo-To-Dine event on Friday, April 30, 2021. Last day to order meal packages is Monday, April 12 and drive-thru meal pick-up will be April 30 between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Enjoy specialty curated meals and cocktails provided by some of Zoo-To-Do's longstanding Restaurant Partners at home. Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo will be held during regular Zoo hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. This daytime celebration will provide fun for the whole family and some of Audubon Zoo’s animals too, ensuring that guests create spooktacular memories. Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo guests are invited to wear their favorite costume. 

“Although Peek-A-Boo at the Zoo won’t look like the traditional Boo at the Zoo event, we are excited to provide our community with a safe environment to celebrate Halloween,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “We are thankful to be able to partner with Children’s Hospital New Orleans to continue to connect children to the natural world.” 

New this year, families can join the fun at the Zoo and help save species from home by building their own backyard bat house. Bats are an important part of a functioning ecosystem. Creating a bat-friendly place in a backyard supports the essential role bats have in the environment. Families can download the project from here and share their photos on social media using the hashtag #SaveNightPuppies. 

Contributions from Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo will benefit Audubon Zoo and Children’s Hospital New Orleans and their shared mission to improve the quality of life for children and families in the New Orleans area, building a brighter future for the community during this difficult time.  

“Children’s Hospital New Orleans is proud to partner with Audubon to present the 2020 “Peek-a” Boo at the Zoo,” said President and CEO of Children’s Hospital New Orleans John R. Nickens IV. “As a beloved New Orleans tradition that benefits both Children’s Hospital and Audubon Zoo, we’re looking forward to two weekends of spooky family fun, reinvented this year to ensure a safe and fun experience for families.”

Guests can directly support children receiving care at Children’s Hospital New Orleans with the purchase of Boo in a Bag. This festive, pumpkin-shaped bag comes stuffed with candy, snacks, a face mask, and special treats for only $10. Bags can be purchased when reserving tickets online and picked up at the Zoo. 

Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo adheres to all safety guidelines as directed by the State of Louisiana are met. All Peek-A-Boo at the Zoo guests are encouraged to wear face coverings. The Zoo’s visitor guidelines will apply during Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo, including timed ticketing, physical distancing, stringent cleaning protocols, and limited capacity – tickets will sell out quickly for this experience. 

Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo is complimentary for Audubon Members and included in general Zoo admission as Halloween lagniappe. There is no additional ticket or fee for this experience. All guests must purchase tickets in advance online for a specific date and entry time; Audubon Members must reserve their complimentary tickets online in advance as well. Peek-a-Boo at the Zoo will be held rain or shine. 

“We hope that our Audubon family understand that this decision has been very difficult and one that we never imagined having to make,” said Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “We look forward to focusing on the planning and preparations for the 2021 event, and we know that Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do will come back better and stronger in 2021.”

Audubon Nature Institute has suffered a tremendous loss of income due to its facility closures since March 14.

“The decision to cancel Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do was an incredibly difficult decision for Audubon Nature Institute and Hancock Whitney. However, the health and well-being of the people of the Gulf South is a top priority for both organizations,” said Hancock Whitney Senior Regional President Gary Lorio. “We will focus on building an even better Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do for 2021 and look forward to celebrating both Audubon and our city at that time.”

The 2020 Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do Silent Auction and the Luxury Vehicle Raffle drawing will both go on as planned. Supporters can still donate items to the Silent Auction by visiting www.bidpal.net/ZTD until August 1, 2020. The Luxury Vehicle Raffle, which features a 2020 Lexus UX200 worth $35,053 generously donated by LEXUS of New Orleans, will be held on Friday, September 11, 2020 at 10:30 p.m.

Raffle Tickets are $100 each, with a limit of 1,000 being sold. There are currently less than 300 raffle tickets left. One lucky winner will be contacted after the drawing is held. While Audubon facilities are closed, supporters can help the dedicated staff who continue to provide outstanding care for the animals and the parks loved by the New Orleans community by donating to the Audubon Recovery Fund.

Hancock Whitney Zoo-To-Do will now be held on Friday, September 11, and Zoo-To-Do for Kids presented by Children's Hospital New Orleans will be held on Friday, August 28. Audubon has been working closely with Hancock Whitney, Children’s Hospital New Orleans, and long-term Sponsors like Chevron to determine the best plan. 

“We love and appreciate our supporters and are so thankful to have celebrated this event with them for more than 40 years,” says Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO Ron Forman. “The health and well-being of our guests is of the utmost importance, so rescheduling these events is the right thing to do. We look forward to carrying on the Zoo-To-Do tradition later this year.” 

Tickets to both events, including Sponsor and Patron packages, will be transferred to the new event date. 

The Zoo-To-Do events raise more than $1.5 million for Audubon each year. These events fund critical operations such as caring for animals and the public parks and museums that Audubon stewards for the New Orleans community.

Music Under the Oaks celebrates the Audubon Park Conservancy, an annual fund that directly supports annual care and improvements in Audubon Park, including ongoing needs such as lawn care, seasonal flower planting, and the protection of historic live oak trees. Party for the Planet presented by Entergy is a series of events and activities celebrating the wonders of nature held across multiple Audubon Nature Institute attractions, March 23 to June 20.

Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Spring into Action kicks off the series at Audubon Louisiana Nature Center on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors are invited to participate in imaginative new ways to experience nature through hands-on discovery and interactive experiences that promote environmental awareness.

“Audubon Louisiana Nature Center is proud to kick off the Party for the Planet series again this year,” says Audubon Louisiana Nature Center Director of Operations Isaac Wyatt. “Our Spring into Action event allows guests the chance to connect with nature in exciting ways and better understand the vital functions of our native ecosystem.”

Guests can interact with local “conservation neighbors” and take part in fun opportunities to experience the natural world including a complimentary night sky demonstration in the Planetarium. Admission to this event is free to the public.

Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited zoos and aquariums across North America are throwing a Party for the Planet, making it the largest combined Earth Day, Endangered Species Day, and World Oceans Day celebration. Party for the Planet offers families unique opportunities to visit their local AZA-accredited zoo and aquarium, celebrate the Earth’s biodiversity, and learn how they can make a difference.

On Saturday, March 7, the family fun includes performances by Lisa Amos, Chucky C., Tara Alexander, The New Orleans Horns Show and Dance Band, Sierra Green & The Soul Machine, and more.

Sierra Green & The Soul Machine will close out the first day at the Zoo’s Capital One Bank Stage with a performance that showcases Green’s effortlessly soulful voice, reminiscent of classical soul vocalists and topped off with the timeless tinge of contemporary soul revival acts.

On Sunday, March 8, the fest will feature powerhouse vocalist CASMÉ best known for her strong vocals and lyrics displaying artistic genius. The native New Orleanian has a collection of work titled “GUMBO” that includes more than 40 records from all genres of music including soul, funk, blues, jazz, hip hop, and more. CASMÉ also holds a winning title for 2019's Essence Festival's "New Orleans Music Showcase."

Other performers on Sunday include The Nayo Jones Experience, Teresa B., and more as Soul Fest highlights musicians of all genres.

“Soul Fest is an iconic event infusing the joyful culture of New Orleans while creating a connection with the natural world,” says Soul Fest coordinator Eileen Lumar-Johnson. “This event has truly become a staple in our local community bringing together people from every walk of life to celebrate African-American culture.”
