Audubon Aquarium of the Americas Celebrates Penguin Awareness Day Wednesday, January 20, 2016

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas is celebrating Penguin Awareness Day on Wednesday, January 20 to raise public awareness about the endangered species.

Guests can enjoy observing these birds in the Aquarium’s penguin habitat and also learn more about the Aquarium’s conservation efforts during up-close encounters at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Audubon Aquarium of the Americas has hatched 54 penguins since opening in 1990. Penguin populations in the wild face enormous challenges, primarily because their food supply is overfished. This sobering fact underscores the importance of breeding efforts at Audubon and elsewhere.

"The penguin habitat and Backstage Penguin Pass are favorites for many of our visitors," said Audubon Aquarium Director Rich Toth. "We want guests to walk away from the Aquarium with a deeper appreciation for these animals and an awareness of the challenges they face in the wild. We hope our penguins will act as ambassadors for the natural world to educate and inspire future generations to take conservation actions."

Schedule of activities in front of penguin habitat:

  • 10:30 a.m. & 3 p.m. - Penguin Feeds

  • 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.- Meet a penguin and Q&A with a penguin keeper

  • Educational materials and penguin crafts throughout the day
