Celebrate Endangered Species Day at Audubon Zoo

Thousands of species are endangered or threatened with extinction and more are added to the list every year. This weekend, Audubon Zoo is taking part in a nationwide, family-friendly event coordinated across the Association of Zoo and Aquariums to help people of all ages connect with nature and learn more about endangered species.

Audubon Zoo hosts Party for the Planet presented by Entergy: Endangered Species Day this Saturday, May 17, 2025. The event is designed to celebrate the threatened and endangered species in Audubon’s care, including approximately 25 percent of Audubon Zoo animals, and teach people about protecting them around the world and here at home.

Endangered Species Day activities include visits with Audubon Zoo’s animal experts about the animals in their care, local and national conservation partners, and members of Audubon Nature Institute’s own conservation teams including Audubon Aquarium Rescue and Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries, both work locally to protect animals that live in and around Louisiana’s coast.

Some of the local conservation partners that will be showcased at Endangered Species Day at Audubon Zoo include:

·        Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries

·        Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge

·        Louisiana Master Naturalists of Greater New Orleans

·        Energy Smart

·        Crown Community Garden

·        International Crane Foundation

Endangered Species Day is part of an environmental education series that includes events across Audubon attractions. Two more special days to celebrate the environment and its biodiversity will be held this summer:

World Ocean Day is Saturday, June 7 at Audubon Aquarium, highlighting work underway to protect the world oceans and aquatic species.

Audubon Insectarium hosts a Pollination Celebration on Saturday, June 28 to teach guests about the importance of pollinators like bees, butterflies, wasps, birds, and bats. Without pollinators, we wouldn’t have plants or food!
