Celebrating World Giraffe Day at Audubon Zoo

Giraffes are disappearing at an alarming rate around the world. They are considered one of the most iconic animals in Africa, and definitely some of the most popular animals at Audubon Zoo.

This Saturday, June 21, 2025, Audubon Zoo celebrates World Giraffe Day. The event will take place at Audubon Zoo from 10:00 a.m.  – 3:00 p.m. and will feature our two favorite young giraffes – Maverick and Fennessy!

Guests can enjoy two special giraffe feedings at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and Zoo team members who care for Maverick and Fennessy will be there to talk with guests about what is involved with caring for the two giraffes. They’ll also have a special cart filled with giraffe bio-facts and fun activities for everyone. Maverick and Fennessy even have their own trading cards for guests to collect!

The number of giraffes in the wild has decreased by roughly 40 percent in the last few decades. Their numbers are impacted by conflicts with humans in their territory, habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, drought, and other changes in their environment. There are an estimated 117,000 giraffes left in the wild, including many subspecies that are critically endangered.

Audubon Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and partners in efforts with other AZA zoos and aquariums to fund giraffe conservation education, scientific research, and works to raise public awareness of giraffes in the wild and in human care.
