Woldenberg Riverfront Park Ranks Second in National Competition

The beautiful Woldenberg Riverfront Park that lines the Mississippi River and is home to Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium is considered one of the best riverfronts in the nation. It has officially received the title of #2 Best Riverwalk in the country by voters in USA Today Reader’s Choice poll.

Woldenberg Riverfront Park opened in 1989. Its 14-acres of grass, trees and walkways offer a nature-filled experience steps away from the French Quarter and is the perfect location for festivals and recreation.  Formerly lined with industrial wharves, the transformed Woldenberg Riverfront Park gives New Orleans area residents and visitors access to the riverfront to enjoy the views of the Mighty Mississippi as it winds its way to the Gulf of Mexico. Just last weekend, it was host to part of the enormously successful French Quarter Festival which brought nearly one million people together to enjoy the music, food, and culture of New Orleans.

This is the first year that Woldenberg Riverfront Park was nominated in the competition. It was selected by an expert panel of USA Today travel writers and editors and voted on by USA Today readers.  It is one of the parks operated by Audubon Nature Institute, and Audubon Aquarium and Audubon Insectarium are located inside the park.

“Woldenberg Riverfront Park lines the Mississippi River and offers a way for people to experience the ‘front porch’ of our city. As guests enjoy the park, they can feel the connection to the historic past of this great city.  Our team works incredibly hard to make the park beautiful and welcoming for locals and visitors to the city,” said Ron Forman, Audubon Nature Institute President and CEO. “We are honored for this iconic New Orleans location to be recognized among the top riverfront parks in the nation.”

New Orleans’ riverfront park land will undergo a major expansion soon as the “Riverfront for All” project begins construction in late summer. That project is the last link in creating two and a quarter miles of connected riverfront park land from Spanish Plaza and Woldenberg Park to the Moonwalk and Crescent Park, establishing one of the largest series of contiguous riverfront parks in the country.
